Intellectual Disability & Mental Health (EP-512)

Description
Intellectual disability is when a person processes information at a slower rate. This is often indicated by challenges with communication, self-care, interpersonal skills and safety. Although these difficulties are present, with supports in place, people with intellectual disability are able to live a meaningful and fulfilled life.

Our mental health is referred to as our emotional, psychological and social well-being. These three things influence our capacity to handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

“There are more than 125,000 people in NSW with intellectual disability and up to 40% of them also live with mental illness.” - Mental Health Commission of New South Wales

This figure demonstrates the need for those working with Intellectual disability to also understand the impact Mental Health may be having on their clients’ ability to engage.
