This 45-minute course gives NDIS support workers foundational knowledge for providing participant-specific tracheostomy support safely and within their authorised scope. It covers preparation, routine care, equipment checks, suctioning, monitoring, emergency response, documentation and handover. Learners are taught to follow the participant’s current support and emergency plans alongside their organisation’s policies and procedures. Completion of the course does not replace participant-specific practical training and competency assessment.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

• Explain the purpose of a tracheostomy and identify essential equipment, safety checks and routine care requirements.

• Recognise changes in a participant’s condition, respond appropriately to emergencies and escalate concerns promptly.

• Provide support within their training and authority while communicating effectively, obtaining consent and documenting care objectively.
